Oswego County, NY
I grew up here, & today I am a local town historian.
This county borders southeastern Lake Ontario. Many local families can trace their histories here back to the Revolutionary War & War of 1812.
Many French-Canadians settled here after traveling down the St. Lawrence River to the Great Lake, then down the Oswego or Salmon Rivers.
The Onondaga Tribe, of the Iroquois Nation, were the earliest known inhabitants.
Chemung County, NY
My Grandmother's family were early settlers here.
Located below the Finger Lakes near the border of New York & Pennsylvania, this area is beautiful and mountainous. This is what drew settlers here after the infamous The Clinton-Sullivan Campaign of 1779.
Some famous people from this county are Geoff Bodine, Tommy Hilfiger, & Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens).
The Seneca, & possibly the Cayuga, were the earliest known inhabitants.
Chautauqua County, NY
My Grandfather's family were early settlers here.
Settlers came to this county after the 1798 Holland Land Purchase, when it became the most Western point of the US. Then, as the country opened westward, it became an important thoroughfare from the Northeast.
Lucille Ball, B F Goodrich, & George Pullman are among the famous born here.
The Erie Tribe, formerly Iroquois Nation, now Seneca Nation of Indians, were the earliest known inhabitants.
